At Davenport Ridge, we follow the Orton Gillingham phonics program. This program in Kindergarten focuses on letter identification and sound matching. There is also a big focus on segmenting and blending, meaning your child will be able to identify the individual sounds in a word, such as /c/ /a/ /t/, and then blend them all together, reading the word "cat."
Children also learn "red words," (also called sight words) which are words that cannot be sounded out with the typical rules of phonics. Our goal is to have students be able to read these on sight, because they can't be sounded out. These sight words are the most frequently used words your child will see in books, so knowing how to read (and write!) them will definitely put your child at a reading advantage.
In Kindergarten we focus on 55 sight words, introducing 1 or 2 new words per week. We do many activities with these words in school, but the best way for your child to learn them is through repetition, repetition, repetition! Practicing these words at home with your child is greatly encouraged!
